The email below is from a reader who is deciding whether to pursue an MBA or a Master of Science in Finance. I get these kidns of questions every now and then and, while I’m not an expert on these other grad degree, I do have opinions on the questions. Hopefully, this member found my perspectives to be useful.

Hey, folks. I know it’s been a minute since I posted a new entry, but the past few weeks have been crazy on my end. Between work, weddings, and other events, I’m basically been slammed. I guess that’s what happens when you become a grown-up…sometimes, I wish I could go back to being a kid, but then I realize that I was broke back then and end up being happy with things they way they are :-)

The email below came from a reader who found me through the interview that I did for ManagementConsulted.com about a year ago. During that interview, I shared several insights that I picked up during my time at McKinsey and tried to give some tips for other folks who want to follow a similar path. Since that interview, I have received several emails from people who had really good and specific questions about topics that I didn’t cover that day and the email below is another one of those. I’ll let you read this person’s questions below.

I’m not certain that … Read the rest

What would you do if you were approaching the business school application process and you suddenly received the opportunity to be a part of a prestigious post-graduate program prior to the MBA? Would you delay the application process for business school? Would you wait until the next year to apply to B-school? Would you walk away from the post-graduate program? I can think of many questions that might go through someone’s mind and this is precisely the situation that one of my readers describes in his email posted below.

Hey, everyone. As my long-time readers know, I like to inform my readers about resources that might be helpful to them. This entry is a quick one to do just that.

I was recently contacted by the folks at Emagister.net with an introduction to their site, which they thought would be a great tool for the members of my reader community who are interested in graduate degree programs. I just visited their site and found it to be a good collection of general information about degree programs across several disciplines, including Business Administration, so I thought it would be a … Read the rest

Hi, everyone. I hope you’re all getting ready to check out what should be a great Superbowl. I’m posting a quick entry to give follow-up on the recent entry from a Software Engineer who was asking about graduate degrees that combine Engineering and Business, such as Stanford’s Management Science and Engineering program and UVA’s Management of Information Technology program. You can find the original reader email and my response at http://www.marquisparker.com/2010/02/question-about-stanfords-mse-program-as-prep-for-management-consulting/.

The message below is from a reader whose story mirrors my own very closely…He was a Computer Science undergrad who moved on to a career as a Software Engineer, which he has been doing for five years. And, like me, he has lost his passion for that line of work and sees a transition to business as the way to achieve his goals. Unlike me, he seems reluctant to pursue an MBA and, instead, he is looking at Stanford’s Master’s program in Management Science and Engineering. In his message, he asks some questions about the program and, although I am… Read the rest

What’s good, folk. You’ve got to love the weekends, right? And, they’re especially good when the NBA playoffs start up. Four games yesterday and four games today make for a sports fan’s dream weekend :-) Plus, the weather is making a turn for the better here in Chicago, so I can’t complain at all. Man, I’m glad I pulled up stakes and moved up here.

This entry’s email is from a reader who has an engineering background and wants to transition to a client-centric role like consulting or I-banking. She’s chosen to pursue graduate Finance programs to rebrand herself and… Read the rest
