Recently, I was approached by the team at Campus Splash and asked to write an article targeted at college students to offer some tips on how they could prepare to create a great MBA application. As all of you know, this is a topic that I’m pretty passionate about, so I jumped at the opportunity. In particular, I’m a strong believer that one’s college years are the perfect time to do this prep, so I consider Campus Splash’s audience to be at the sweet spot for this sort of thing.
The message below is the kind that I find to be both encouraging and discouraging. It’s encouraging because it’s from a 4th year college student who is already thinking ahead to business school, but it’s discouraging because it seems like this student is rushing into the process before he’s ready.
I’ll let you guys read his email to get more background, but, in summary, this reader wants to get a Stanford MBA, but doesn’t want to wait 2-3 years after graduating college to do it. He wants to get the MBA as soon as possible because he wants to be … Read the rest
Back on July 5th, I told all of you about a free webinar that was being held on July 8th by TheArtOfApplying.com, my friend Kaneisha Grayson’s new B-school coaching company.
The webinar was entitled “B-school Despite the Odds” and, in it, Kaneisha gave an overview of her own background and what most people would say were shortcomings in her application followed by some general tips that she’s used to help some of her clients over the years. I was really impressed with how open she was about her own MBA application journey and her willingness to put it all … Read the rest
What’s up, peoples. The message below is from a college senior who is targeting admission to business school straight out of undergrad. As I’ve mentioned in past entries, it is incredibly difficult to gain admission to a top MBA program right out of undergrad, but there are several spectacular candidates who make it happen each year. This reader is looking for advice from me about whether this could be a possibility for him without telling me much more than the fact that he’s a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I did my best to talk him through my thinking on… Read the rest
Hey there, everyone. I hope you’ve all had a nice weekend and are ready to tackle another week on the grind at work. Some of you may have noticed that my frequency of posting entries has slowed in recent weeks. I apologize for that, but I guess that’s what happens when work gets busy and the summer starts getting fun. I’m going to try to ramp up my posting going forward because my Inbox is filling up, but we’ll see how that goes as the summertime activities keep me busy. Gotta love having time for a real life, huh?

Happy Monday, everyone. Actually, Monday is almost over, but that’s reason to celebrate since this is the day of the week that everyone dreads most, right? I actually have started enjoying Mondays lately because a group of my GSB folk started a routine of gathering for dinner and goofing off a few weeks ago and it’s been hella fun. It’s a great way to unwind after a Monday in the office and, most of all, it’s great because I wouldn’t have been able to do it at this time last year. It is really nice to have a chance to… Read the rest
What’s going on, y’all. Since coming back from India, I’ve been trying to get my mental clock back in order, but it sure has been difficult. I’ve usually done OK with recovering from spending a few days in a far-away time zone, but coming back from a nine-day trip is a BEAST!!! Hopefully, I’ll be able to knock out a couple more reader emails this coming weekend as my sleep schedule rights itself.
Anyways, the message below is from a reader who won’t graduate from college until 2010 and plans to apply to business school right out of undergrad. As… Read the rest

Hello all. I hope you’re all enjoying your weekend and are ready to start another work-week. As for me, I’m finally getting over the effects of jetlag from my trip to India and have checked the Inbox for this blog…whew, I have received quite a few emails in the past week or two. It seems that the interview I completed for ManagementConsulted.com (shout out to Kevin G.) brought some new folks my way, so I guess there are a few more people for me to help out. As always, I will get to all of the emails I receive, but… Read the rest
