I’m not sure if any of you are interested in the business of sports, but it’s an area that I find fascinating. Ever since taking Prof. Foster’s “Sports Management” course at the GSB, I’ve been intrigued by the money generated by and controlled within the sports industry. If any of you have a particular interest in the area, then the article below may interest you.

The article below was written by a contributing author named Kathryn Rivas who runs her own site devotes to online college and graduate education. She approached me about putting something together for my readers and I’m always a fan of bringing as much information to people as possible. If you would like any further information about Sports Management MBA programs, feel free to contact her directly.

Interested in a Career in Sports? Consider an MBA in Sports Management

Sports and entertainment are two industries that weathered the economic recession and came out of it all fairly well. A recent opinion article in the Daily Record, a Jacksonville-based business and law newspaper, asserts that, with the exception of local ticket sales, the sports industry has largely been unaffected by the poor economy.

For future MBA students interested in sports, an emphasis in sports management may be the right choice. According to an article written in the student newspaper of NYU’s Stern School of Business, pursuing an MBA degree could help students move along the path to owning a sports team. The article explains how 41% of sports owners have graduate degrees, and six professional baseball players have MBAs.

Since the field of study is relatively new, there are only a few dozen MBA programs with a specific focus on sports management and/or marketing. The following are three programs that may be of interest for MBA students who would like to pursue a career in sports.

1. University of Oregon’s Lundquist School of Business MBA in Sports Business Program. Started in 1993, this program was the first MBA ever to incorporate a specific focus in sports business. Both ESPN and Sports Illustrated have cited the Oregon MBA program as the top sports marketing program in the country. The sports business program is housed at the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, where leading industry speakers give lectures and professors teach and perform research in a top-rated sports think tank.

2. San Diego State University’s Sports Business Management MBA Program. As the only fully-accredited sports-focused MBA program in California, SDSU’s sports business degree offers an array of classes tailored specific for the sports industry, as well as a core curriculum typical of general MBA programs. SDSU also hosts the annual SDSU International Sports MBA Case Competition, in which top MBA schools from all over the world come to compete.

3. UNC-Charlotte, Belk College of Business-MBA in Sports Management and Marketing . UNC’s program is one of the most competitive sports-related MBAs in the country, accepting only fifteen students every year. The Sports MBA offers courses like Sports Law, Sports Economics, and Professional Sports Selling. Every student is required to intern for a six month period with a sports-related company or agency during their second year in the program.
