The email below (or collection of emails) came from an international student wih a Technology background who is currently enrolled at a US business school. He arrived at B-school targeting Consulting as his career path, but has since become interested in Finance. He’s having a tough time deciding which path to take with his career, so he’s looking for my advice on the issue. His original email came to me over the summer, but he made the mistake of sending me a follow-up email to rush a response from me. Y’all know how I am when it comes tot aht … Read the rest
The message below came in at the end of August and, because I’ve been so busy, I’m just now seeing it a few days before the start of 2010. As such, I wonder whether my response will arrive in time to be useful to this recipient. The reader has been following my site for a while and had one of his other emails answered by me about a year ago. He’s an IT professional with 10 years of work experience who is targeting Stanford and Harvard for his MBA. His question is about whether his age and amount of work … Read the rest
What’s good, folk. While working my way through my backlog of reader emails, I came across three messages that I was able knock out pretty quickly, so this entry will be followed by two other pretty short entries. Each of these entries will be all-text (i.e. no videos), but I may mix in some videos to make more progress in getting through my old emails. I’m SO far behind in that respect.
The email below is from a Round 1 applicant to the GSB and HBS who had a question about how to best submit supplemental recommendations for her B-school … Read the rest

The email for this entry comes from an MBA aspirant who is trying to decide between applying for Stanford’s MBA/MA.Ed program or the JD/MBA program, but his email has nothing to do with questions about either kind of program. Rather, he’s wondering what my plans are, if any, to work in the for-profit education space. I seldom get emails asking about me, so I enjoyed responding to this one. I haven’t really figured out whether I’ll do any work in for-profit education in my career, so I described some of my very early thinking on the matter.

The email below comes from a Mechanical Engineer from India who is aspires to earn an MBA in the United States and is considering a long enlistment in the Indian Army to gain leadership experience. He’s got two primary questions for me. First, he’s wondering whether his military experience in India would give him any benefit in applying to US business schools. Second, he wants my guidance about whether he should enlist in the military or take an engineering position in the private sector. As you can imagine, I’m reluctant to give him anything on the second question because it … Read the rest
2009 has been a pretty wild year for business schools and their students. There have been many highs and lows for MBAs over the past 12 months, but I’m hopeful that things will starting looking up in 2010. BusinessWeek.com recently published its list of the top B-school related stories of 2009 and I thought that some of you might be interested in the list.

I’m posting the article below because it serves as a sort of companion piece to my Dec. 19th entry with job search tips from The Wall Street Journal. In the article, the author describes the support groups that are popping up at business schools across the country as students struggle in the worst job market in decades. I know several people from the MBA class of 2009 who formed these types of groups last year and credit them for helping to keep their sanity during their job searches. I feel really fortunate that I finished up my MBA in 2006 … Read the rest
