Hey, folk. Just wanted to make a quick post about a couple of recent emails/comments from readers that brought a smile to my face.

The first is from KK, the reader who wrote the email from my most recent entry. To refresh your memory, KK is a college freshman who wants to move into Consulting and wanted advice to set himself up over the next few years. Most of the time, I don’t even get a “thank you” when I respond to emails, but KK hit me back a few hours after I sent my message, which honestly surprised me. You can look back to the last entry to see my response, but you can see his reply to my email below:

“Marquis,

Thanks much, you’re a huge help! It means a lot that you’re taking the time -even if you’re doing it for everyone. Especially, actually.

I’ll either be working at a small investment bank or a few tech startups in Palo Alto/Menlo Park this summer, I’m leaning towards tech. Your advice is extremely relevant, I’m glad I found you early. Definitely informative; it’ll be a while before I have anything close to your experience, if ever.

I haven’t had this much direction in life since I wanted to be an astronaut, you’re a large part of that.

Take care, KK”

It was pretty cool to get that response from KK so quickly, but the last sentence in his email was what really made me grin :-)

The second reader message was a comment left on the very first entry of this blog from Oct. 14, 2003…that’s going waaaaay back, right? This reader is a guy named Mauricio who is an MBA aspirants with an interest in Consulting as a post-MBA career. He found this site through a Google search and actually took the time to read through my old entries (WORD TO THE WISE: If you read through my old stuff, you’ll likely find the answers to a LOT of questions you might want to ask me). After reading this joint, he was inspired to start up his own blog to share his stories and help others…that’s pretty daggone cool, right? Maybe I’m the only one who thinks so, but I’m going to post his comment below anyway because it made me smile. :-) By the way, if you get a chance, check out his blog. He’s got a good start going and it never hurts to get someone else’s perspective on the MBA game. Without further delay, here’s his comment:

“Hey Marquis. This is a great blog. I’ve been googling around looking for sites to read about business school and about working at a consulting firm, primarily McKinsey. I am glad that I found a well written blog that ends up being about both. I don’t know how often you get this but last night after reading your blog for about four hours I decided that I should start one of my own and see where it goes. After finishing reading dozens of your posts I made my first entry for http://mauricioscareerblog.blogspot.com/ and I cited you as one of the reasons for me starting it. Hope you don’t mind me putting you in there and posting a comment on this first entry. I didn’t know where else to put it and felt it would be somewhat relevant since I’m now starting my own version of what you started six years ago with this entry. Well thanks for your words on this blog and below is the the first paragraph of my first entry where you’re mentioned. Thanks,

So how does this work? Alright, well writing in one form or another is something I’ve always wanted to do. Getting published is one thing that I dream/think about late at night before I go to sleep when I idealize what I’d love to do at some future point in life. I never thought I would be a blogger but this idea/impulse to do so let’s me scratch my writing itch and I hope this is the first of many posts. So what prompted this endeavor and what is this blog about? Well, career wise a lot of life changing events have happened lately and some more are to come in the next couple of months and years. Most importantly is that since August of 2008 I’ve taken steps to gain acceptance to an MBA program. Also, I’ve been interested in reading about business school and working in marketing or consulting and last night I found http://marquisweblog.blogspot.com/. It is well written and spans over six years from apps to working at McKinsey and after. I’ve never had a journal but I’m sure it’s great to be able to look at entries and see how one’s life has progressed while at the same time sharing your experiences with others who might be going through the same events. All of these aforementioned reasons are why I’ve decided to also start a blog. To answer the second part of my question, this blog will talk about how I’ve gotten to where I am today in my MBA process and the career events that take place from here on out as I look to future career paths.”
