What’s going on, everyone. This is going to be a relatively short entry because the email I’m responding to is asking for the world but isn’t giving me much to work from. So, I couldn’t really give the guy much in terms of a response. I’m not saying that anyone who emails me should send me a dissertation’s worth of text in an email (because I don’t have time to read all that), but I ask that people are willing to put some thought into their own situation before emailing me. I don’t mind being of assistance, but I really can’t develop the pre-MBA application strategy for people…at least, I hope that folks don’t think that’s something I should be doing. Anyways, let’s get to the entry…

My response:

MT,

Thanks for checking out my blog and thinking of me as a resource for your questions. Unfortunately, I’m not sure of how helpful I can be because you haven’t given me much to work on. This isn’t an invitation for you to send a follow-up email with your life’s story, but I just say this to set your expectations for what might be in my response to your email. It seems like you’ve got a lot of passion to earn an MBA, but your email leaves me wondering how much you’ve thought about how to approach the process. I can give you a few high level tips here, but there’s no real substitute for you doing your own due diligence into how to approach the MBA application process.

At a high level, here’s my read on what you should be thinking about right now:

- Take the GMAT as soon as possible — It’s difficult to get an idea of your total MBA package with that piece of information missing. Many people say that they’re confident of the scores they can earn, but I’d guess that some of them miss the mark. So, I’d recommend getting the GMAT and TOEFL out of the way now and then evaluating your chances at that point. If you can get the scores you’ve projected, I’d say you have a good shot at getting into B-school one day, but you’ve got to actually get those scores first.

- Think about your MBA story — Based on what you’ve told me, I can see that you want an MBA, but I don’t have a clue of why you want it and what you’ll do with it. You just earned a MSc in Electrical Engineering, but it doesn’t seem like you want to make use of it career-wise before business school. Why not? What is the rush to get an MBA? MBA admissions officers might wonder the same thing, so you should come up with answers to those questions and incorporate them into your application essays.

- Build up your work experience — Right now, you’ve got some part-time work experience and you MAY be able to gain admission based on it, but it could be a difficult proposition to do so. I’d recommend figuring out your short- and long-term career goals and choosing a full-time gig that will get you closer to those goals. Then, you can incorporate the experiences you’ll gain into your MBA story (mentioned above).

Take care and good luck with your MBA application process. I’m sure that you’ll be able to put together some strong applications once you’ve fully thought through the pieces of your application package.
