What’s good, folk. After my recent looooong entry about myself, it’s time for me to get back to dispensing advice to readers. The email below is from a teacher who wants to make a big career switch, facilitated by earning an MBA. She has a few starter questions that I’ve answered below, but I also gave her some advice about how to approach this whole idea. Let’s see if she finds it useful…

Hey everyone. This is going to be a quick post, but I thought it was worth putting up to help a great organization. One of my GSB classmates forwarded the following email to me about an organization called Embrace that is hoping to help premature babies in developing countries. It is currently being led by a GSB’08 alum, so you know I’ve got to put my support behind it. Here’s some more information.

I just received this email from the reader I responded to in my August 21 entry. It’s good to see that she’s ready to face the application process with a renewed focus.
I hope all of you will cross your fingers and wish her well as she prepares to apply again.

What’s up, peoples. I hope you’re all doing well and looking forward to the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend (at least in the U.S.). For those of you about to start your MBA programs, make sure you do it up this weekend because you’re about to get hit with a waterhose’s worth of core curriculum in a few short weeks. This time of year always makes me nostalgic…I wish I could go back to 2004 and redo the beginning of my time at Stanford GSB
OK, now on to what i know you’re all waiting for…the content of this… Read the rest

What’s good, folk. I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying your summers as the days tick by in August. The email below is from a prospective re-applicant to Stanford GSB who really seems to be buggin’ out as she approaches the new application season. In situations like this, I wish I had the perfect solution to get someone an admit letter, but we all know that I can’t make that happen…Honestly, I still don’t know how I made it happen for myself. In this response, i’ve tried to give her some good advice, but I fear that it didn’t… Read the rest
Hey, everyone. After the deaths of Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes this weekend, I was seriously thrown for a loop. Now that it’s all settled in, I thought I should get back to addressing entries because my Inbox is getting extra, extra backed up.
The email below is from a prospective applicant to the joint degree program that I completed at Stanford. He’s interested in becoming a non-profit endowment mnager after school and is wondering whether he might be a fit for the program. He’s asked some questions that might be better suited for folks in the admissions office, but… Read the rest

Yesterday, I made a post about the passing of Bernie Mac, which really got to me. Now, I’ve just heard about the death of Isaac Hayes…one of the smoothest cats ever to walk this earth. This has been an awful weekend for entertainment overall, but especially for urban entertainment. If you haven’t heard of him, I’m sure that you’ve heard of his most famous contribution to music, The Theme to ‘Shaft’… Read the rest. He also provided the voice for the character of Chef on “South Park”. We’ve lost another great one…
What’s going on, everyone. I hope you’re all having a nice weekend. I’m about to crash for the evening, but I wanted to write a quick entry to comment about two things…so, here I go:
1. I don’t know how many of you are comedy fans, but anyone who tracks comedy was likely as saddened as I was to hear about the passing of Bernie Mac earlier this morning. I’ve been a huge fan of that guy since his first appearance on Def Comedy Jam over 15 years ago. He had a way of relating to people through his performances… Read the rest
