Happy holidays, everyone. The email below is from an engineer at Yahoo who is looking for a way to keep himself from getting pigeonholed as a techie and wants to pursue a Master’s in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford…I guess this has become an area where I’m pretty good at giving advice. The wrinkle in this situation is that he already has an MBA from a smaller program and wants to move into Consulting or Finance. This isn’t a
The email below is from a reader who is applying to business school as an “older” applicant who just recently decided that an MBA is right for him. He’s looking for some ways to justify his “recent interest” in the degree, so I’ve tried to help him think through the issue. I hope I’ve given him the kind of response he’s looking for here…

What’s up, everyone. The email below is from a teacher who is interested in applying to International Business programs. This is a totally new area because I didn’t look at any programs that focused on that area, so I hope he still finds my perspective useful…even if it is admittedly somewhat uninformed.

First of all, great blog. I just found it and it’s the best thing I’ve found yet regarding my situation.
I’m in the process of applying to MBA programs as a career change. I’ve been a teacher for 3 years now, but I’m… Read the rest
Hey there, folk. The email below is a prospective Bschool student with a social science background who is trying to make a transition into the investment industry. She’s asked me some rather specific questions about a few schools, none of which is Stanford, so it was a challenge for me to respond. These sorts of emails are always tough because I was never a student at any other school, so anything I’d say can’t really be considered the “real deal”.
The email below is from an undergrad who is looking to get a full-time job in Consulting and wants some advice on how to approach it. He emailed me about a month ago and I feel bad for taking so long to get back to him, but I did get to this one in the order that it arrived…this is one of the side effects of doing this blog in my spare time (which there isn’t too much of nowadays).
What’s up, y’all. If you look at the links to the right of this blog page, you’ll notice a couple of new links that’ll give you some other MBA and Stanford viewpoints. Here’s a little more information on those links:

The first site is a directory of blogs across genres and Stanford-associated parties (faculty, staff, students, and alums). I didn’t even know the directory existed until I was contacted by the school’s Director of Internet Media Outreach
So, I was having another recruiting conversation with another MBA student from Fuqua who is a regular reader of this blog and he informed me that he has a blog of his own. Once I saw the name of it, I KNEW that I had to pass it along to you guys:

If you’re considering applying to Fuqua, you should check it out. Shout out to “A.D.”!!!
What’s good, folk. I’ve decided to try something a little different with this post and hope that some of you find it useful.
A couple of days ago, I was talking to a Fuqua MBA1 student about summer recruiting at my employer and he mentioned that reading this blog had encouraged him to write a regular column in the Fuqua campus newspaper. He asked if he could send me some of his stuff to review and offered to post
Most of you probably don’t know who Pimp C, but the hip-hop fans out there might know him as half of the Houston rap duo UGK. He passed away earlier today in LA, so I wanted to send him a shout out…

Houston Rapper Pimp C Found Dead In Hotel
LOS ANGELES — Pimp C, one-half of the veteran Houston rap group UGK, was found dead in an upscale hotel on Tuesday. He was
The email below is from a consultant at a boutique management consulting firm in India who is interested in transitioning to Private Equity in the future. As I may have mentioned on here before, my knowledge on the PE industry is still building, but I’ve tried to give him a few tips on how to think about his issue. Hope he finds it helpful.
