Just got this from my man Jon and it made me laugh out loud.

1.) Harvard – Pros: The best academic brand in the world,
people from East Timor will know where you went to school. Graduates are
extremely polished and dynamic leaders. its no coincidence that so many
politicians these days are HBS grads.

Cons: Students are about as pompous and pretentious as possible. Polish is
a fancy way of saying full of s**t. its no coincidence that so many
politicians these days are HBS grads.

Office Space Character: Lumbergh (Peter’s hated boss). He’s a quintessential

The email responded to in this message is from yet another former engineer who is looking at business school and consulting. You know, there seem to be a lot of techies making this transition and there isn’t a lot of information out there to help them. I hope the responses that I come up with and post here are helping to fill in that gap in information.

Before moving on, I would like to make one request of everyone out there who might send me an email with questions in it. Please take the time to read through my past… Read the rest

I just got the email from my man Joost (GSB ’06) to announce the launch of his company’s new site GlobalMotion.com. It sounds like a really good concept and, best of all, it will be driven by inputs of the general public, including all of you. Please take a look at his message and see if there is any content that you can add to the site. Thanks.

The email below is from a young lady that I met at the 2007 MBA Jumpstart event that I attended last month. During the dinner, I spoke to several of the candidates about a variety of topics, including working in consulting, my employer, and a quick exercise referred to as the “Six Degrees of Marquis” where I tried to find mutual connections between each of the students and me. She’s just started her first year of business school and is wondering how to best position herself early on for a summer internship in consulting.

The first question in her email… Read the rest

What’s going on, folks. I’ve got another request from an IT guy trying to make the transition over to business school and consulting. When I started writing this blog, I had no idea that there were so many people out there who felt similarly stuck in IT like I did. I hope folks are finding these entries useful as guidance for moving out of that trap.

By now, many of you have probably seen the YouTube video of “Chocolate Rain” by Tay Zonday because it’s been one of the biggest web clips of recent memory. Many people have clowned this kid for his voice and I laughed like crazy the first time I saw it (and its many knockoffs). Recently, I checked out the lyrics and was like ‘WHOA!’…this kid is on some other stuff with what he’s talking about in this song.

What’s up, y’all. It looks like the exodus of techies out of IT and into Bschool and consulting is going to continue for a long while. The message below is from an IT engineer who is trying to figure out a way to differentiate himself as he looks to reapply to business school. His request is similar to another one I got a couple of months back, so I’ll reference that earlier response and add in a little more content for some extra flavor here.

This entry is a bit of a stretch for me because the reader is asking me about job advice for a gig at the United Nations. I’ve never worked there and I’m nowhere close to an expert on this, but I’m going to try to break this into pieces and address each part. The funny thing about being in Consulting is that it gives you a whole new way to think about problems and makes even the most foreign topic seem approachable. Now, let’s see how well this turns out…
