What’s going on, y’all. I’m writing this entry from a hotel in Philly, where I am for McK’s annual BCSS Conference. I plan on writing an entry about this experience when I have some more time. For now, I’d like to post the following request for case interview practice partners that I received from a reader in London. She’s got a somewhat non-traditional background and wants to get started practicing as soon as possible. If you’re interested in working with her on case, please contact her directly.

I received the following email from a college friend of mine to publicize a new book that was written by another Princeton grad. I don’t know the guy, but I’ve got to help out my fellow Princetonian. The book actually sounds interesting, so i might just pick it up myself…

In this entry, I’m responding to an email from an applicant who is trying to get off of the GSB’s waitlist. This is a situation that I KNOW some of the readers out there can identify with, so I tried to make my response as general as possible. For those of you reading this who are waitlisters, keep the faith! I know of some people in my class at the GSB who got in off the waitlist and there are a lot of factors that come into play here, so it could just work out for you if things line… Read the rest

I recently got the following in an email and thought that some of the future and current entrepreneurs out there might be interested in it. This could be a good way for some of you to get the exposure necessary to take your businesses to the next level. Y’all know I try to pass on info about events that sound good when I can…

There seems to be a number of us out there who see a need for
entrepreneurs to sharpen their focus on customers. Seeing the world as

As my long-time readers know, I was born in raised in Virginia and have shouted it out many times on this blog. By now, I’m sure everyone has heard about today’s shootings at Virginia Tech, which is being called the largest massacre in American history. According to my mother, no one connected to our family was injured in the shootings, but I’m still typing this entry with a heavy heart. I hate that this had to happen to kids who were doing nothing but trying to pursue educations. My thoughts and prayers are with anyone back home in VA who’ve… Read the rest

“As a soon-to-be Ph.D. starting at McK in the fall, I thought I’d offer my perspective. APDs at McKinsey attend a three-week “Mini-MBA” course in addition to the week of “Basic Consulting Readiness” that all new consultants get. You’d also learn a lot on the job, of course, but friends have told me that after an Associate has been with the Firm for about six months it’s hard to tell the MBAs and APDs apart.

Several APDs have told… Read the rest

I just received the following message from one of the founders of FreePledge.com and decided to post it on here to drum up support for their team in an award competition. I’m a big fan of this site and, if you have never heard of it, feel free to check them out and use them to help one of a long list of non-profits raise funds.

The question below is from a reader who is interested in Consulting, but doesn’t come from a traditional MBA background. She’s got a PhD, which puts her into a whole different candidate category. At my firm, we refer to this group as Advanced Professional Degree (APD) candidates and other firms have similar ways to reference them. I’ve talked to a few APD folks both at my firm and at others and have heard about some concerns, but I’m nowhere close to an expert on this, so I’d encourage anyone reading this to seek out APD people at the firms to… Read the rest
