Happy New Year!!!

I just realized that it’s been about three weeks since I posted anything up here, which is probably the longest that I’ve gone without putting something new up, so I thought I’d add a quick entry. Opening this blog up to questions/comments from readers via marquisweblog-AT-gmail-DOT-COM hasn’t really worked out the way I thought it would. I thought I would get a bunch of questions here and there and would just make posts up here to respond to them. Instead, I’ve gotten a handful of emails that have been pretty specific in nature, so my responses didn’t seem well suited to posting. One upside to it has been that I’ve been able to provide some assistance to folks who are really on the grind in the pursuit of a consulting internship, which gets me excited. So, if any of you have any questions, whether general or specific, let me know and I’ll try my best to hit you with a good response.

Now, lemme think about what has happened since I last wrote something…I believe I told you guys that my first study ended and that went well. Since then, I spent a week and a half relaxing after the holidays and started off getting involved with the sumer internship recruiting process in the new year. I found it cool to interact with the full-time recruiting candidates, but it’s a whole different thing to be dealing with first-year students gunning for internships because I’ve found that people are a lot more worried about what to expect from the entire process. Given that these kids have only had one semester/quarter of coursework, i can totally understand their concerns. The two pieces of advice that I try to give over and over is to be as confident as possible and work hard to build relationships with people at the firms, but those don’t really address people’s worries about going through the actual case interviews. By now, I hope all of the first-years reading this entry have started practicing for the cases and, if you haven’t, PLEASE start as soon as possible…practice makes perfect when it comes to case and this is especially important when gunning for a summer internship because it’s the best way to get used to cases and build the necessary business understanding and problem solving techniques necessary to impress the consulting firms this early on. Thinking back to my own struggles, I can now say that I would have been much better off if I’d learned to do cases earlier and had practiced more cases leading up to the interviews.

For those of you in the middle of the MBA summer recruiting cycle, feel free to give the case interview guide that I wrote a read –> Case Prep Guide. I was told that people found it helpful during the full-time recruiting cycle and I’ve tried to make it comprehensive as possible. The document hasn’t changed since I updated and posted it in November, but I’ve been asked to send it to people a few times since then and thought it made sense to “up” it in a new posting. Good luck with all of your upcoming interviews…

    Marquis,

What a great blog you have here! I will definitely use your gmail account for more personal conversation. The case interview prep guide is insightful. I subscribe to a few blogs from current & ex-McKinsey, and yours is my must read because we have similar background in school plus career path. I am thinking about switching my profession to management consulting as well. Although, I will always keep technology on the side just because I enjoy it.

    And, happy new year!
