Ahhh, everything that I’ve been working for in the past couple of years is becoming reality tomorrow morning with the start of my first official study. I was “on the beach” last week and, while it felt strange being idle, I was able to get a lot of little tasks done with that five free days in the office. Now, I’ll be hopping on a plane at 7am and heading to the Midwest for a project that should last until the middle of December. I’ve been told that I’m joining one of several teams working for this client and the overall collection of McK people is a tight-knit group that is led by one of the most influential Partners in the Southern Office. I still need to check with the folks at McK to see what it is and isn’t OK for me to post about project stuff, so I can’t give many details. But, I’m sure all of you know that I’m ridiculously excited…and nervous…right now. From what i hear, the client is very pro-McKinsey, which is always a good thing when approaching an engagement, and the work that the teams are doing has been having a major impact on the client. I just hope I can go in there and hit the ground running. Man, it’s really real…too bad I’ve got to drag my luggage two blocks down the street at 5:30am to get to my car and hit the airport.
In addition to looking forward to my first study for McKinsey, I’m looking forward to moving into a new house soon. After spending the second half of last week looking at real estate, I finally found a place that looks like it would work well for me. The contract is in and now I’ve just got to wait for it to clear. Hopefully, I’m going to be able to move in by the end of the month and I’ll be able to get my housing situation just as set up as my career situation is. Before I go, I wanted to copy a comment that was left on the post I made describing my current rental issues. The user didn’t leave her name, but i’d like to thank her for her words because it gives me a lot to think about. I hope you guys find what she had to say useful:

She is in breach of the lease agreement she signed with you and I, personally, would hammer her for it.
She is well aware of the access card situation and it is her responsibility to ensure that she rents you a place per the terms of the lease agreement; this means working keys, etc.
Aside from due dilligence you also have to be stern with people, especially when they are obviously trying to screw you over.
She says she “will not hold you” to the lease, but, unless you have it in writing, I would take that with a grain of salt.
If you were to move out, despite her verbal agreement, should could come back and sue you for breaching the lease agreement and collect the ENTIRE amount of the total least (i.e., Accelleration Clause).
sorry for the rant.. I own a condo and am married to an attorney and despise people as your landlord.

Good luck on your first big engagement!
congratulations on your first engagement. the road ahead is definitely bright
Good luck on your first project. I understand the issue about the uncertainty about what is ok or not to post. I had a colleague who was a blogger and posted information about work stuff (at a top company). He thought it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, our IT department seems to aggressively scan the internet for information concerning the company and workers and somehow found his blog. Subsequently, he was fired because of confidentiality breaches. He thought the information was harmless and vague enough, however they disagreed. So this is an important issue that many bloggers should pay special attention to. As much as I would like to hear what’s going on with a company like McK, it’s better to be safe than sorry. My friend learned that the hard way…
Once again, good luck on your engagement.
Hey Marquis, I would advise you not to post anything on the engagements you’re on. Not if you are unhappy or happy, not if you like it or not, nothing like that. Always remember a client might be reading it.
What you can write about is general impressions of the job as a consultant, about trainings, about what you learn, what people are like… But don’t refer to specific engagements. Just my 2 cents…
Hi Marquis,
could you please mail me the cousulting interview material at mailtogautam@gmail.com
Thanks
