After a few days getting my new pad set up in ATL, I’m back in California to get a little more time in the Bay before starting work. While I’m here, I’m planning to spend time kickin’ it with my GF and other Bay area-based friends, but I’m also going to be helping out with a cool new program that the GSB has started up this summer.
For those that don’t know, business schools, including the GSB, make a ton of money on doing ezecutive education and often run a lot of exec ed programs during the summer months while students are off doing their internships. In addition to doing programs for traditional companies, the GSB has done a program for NFL Players and one for NFL executives for the past few years under the leadership of Prof. George Foster.
This summer, Foster launched a new executive education program for NBA players aimed at giving them a business overview that should prepare them for careers after their playing days end. Participants in the NBA program will have a classroom experience similar to students, complete with professor-led case discussions…this is where I and other students/alums come in. Prof. Foster likes to have students participate in the study group sessions for these athletes to help generate ideas and guide the conversations. In particular, he looks for GSB folks who were students in his Sports Management classes and, since I’m just chillin’ anyway, I thought it’d be a great opportunity to be one of his study group “moderators”. The NBA program has been going on for a few days now, so I don’t know if the players will even need my assistance…it’ll still be cool to do though
I’ll write an entry tomorrow night after I get back from the study group session, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to provide much detail because of confidentiality in the program…I sure hope I can give you guys some good info though.

that is so cool, is Shaq gonna come ?
Who knows? Shaq did get his MBA from University of Phoenix a year or two ago. Maybe he would be there
is a University of Phoenix MBA even awknowledged in the work-place?
Anonymous,
It really depends on the workplace. I studied online MBA programs in a few of my Ed School classes and there is definitely a market out there for folks with those degrees. It seems that the government and any smaller companies are willing to reward people for the knowledge that they pick up in those types of programs. Plus, there is a huge community of people who want to get an MBA but don’t want to go onto a campus and some employers are fine with that. I wouldn’t say that the top-tier employers are out there seeking Univ of Phoenix MBA’s, but there are places that would reward those candidates well for the degree.
