I had a heck of a day doing a walking tour of the downtown area of Fez and had some interesting experiences. The following is an excerpt of a log that I’ve been keeping to share what I do on this trip with my GF and I thought you guys might find it funny:
I’m not sure why, but it seemed that random folks all over the city of Fez wanted to sell me something…just me. I was like they would seek me out to offer me items and I was taking care to not make eye contact with them. I just don’t get it. I’d be walking down the street and vendors would ignore my classmates and come straight to me. I had two situations today where the vendors targeted me in retail establishments and I have no clue why. The first was when we visited a shop that made crafted metal items like plates, jewelry, and dishes. The store owner gave us a demonstration of how they made their intricately designed engravings and told us that we could look around the store to see if there was anything we wanted. There were about 25 of us in my group, but the salespeople kept on pushing up on me to get a sale when I was just trying to look around. Once I decided to get something, the store owner himself gave the super hard-sell and was able to run a good game on me to buy a couple of souvenir items that I later found out from my man Charaf (the Moroccan classmates leading the trip) were overpriced by a factor of 2 or 3. Getting ripped off angered, but I had to charge it to the game because I should’ve been more suspicious of the shop owner. Anyways, the second notable incident was when we visited the tannery and 5 or 6 guys in there tried to convince me to buy a leather jacket. At the end of that visit, this one dude straight up grabbed my arm and dragged me along with him to look at leather jackets. I would have pulled my arm away from him, but I was afraid that I’d get it back without my watch so I went with him. Instead of the room being close to the exit as I thought, this dude took me all over the place to get to a specific room of leather jackets, which happened to be away from where my man Charaf was. Fortunately, Charaf found me and “rescued” me from the hard-sell, but it was ridiculous. I don’t know what it was about me, but something made these folks think that I had money to spend and they weren’t about to let me get away without at least making an attempt to hook me.

Hello Marquis!
How are you?
So, how was your trip to Morocco?
Did you like it? oh, no, don’t tell me anything. I know the answer, yes!!
Morocco is a fascinating country filled with mysterious beauty and extreme contrasts. Even though it is only one hour by ferry from Spain, it seems worlds apart with a deeply traditional culture based on Islam, that might be quite unknown to some of us.
I have been there only once but it was enough to fell in love with this city.
