My first entry

To give you a little background on myself, I am currently a Software Engineer with a small software company about 30 miles outside of Washington DC. I’ve got a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Princeton and a Master’s degree in Management of Information Technology from UVA. My ultimate career goal is to become the CEO of a Technology company and my current education hasn’t given me the business background to make that move, so I plan to get that background in business school. I could just sit back and get that knowledge through added work experience, but I’m on the paper chase and time is money, so I’m all about getting where I want to go as quickly as I can.
I started my application process back on July 4 by drafting a bunch of the standard essays that appear on most applications (Why MBA, Ethical Dilemma, Leadership experience, etc). That made things a lot easier once schools started releasing their apps in August because I could tweak what I’d already put together and customize them to what the schools wanted. I had to write plenty of essays from scratch, but it was a huge burden lifted off of me to have several of the essays already knocked out. I’m gunning for the first round for allof my schools so i can get this over with. So far, I’ve submitted my apps to Stanford, Harvard, and Fuqua and I’ve still got the Kellogg and Consortium apps ahead of me. Dang, I can’t wait until i’ve got these things all turned in. I just hope i get into soemwhere because I’ve put in too much work to get a bunch of ding letters.
Ok, I guess I’ll close this entry out because it is close to midnight and I’ve still got to put some work in on one of my apps before I crash for the night. i’ll catch you later.

Hey Marquis. This is a great blog. I’ve been googling around looking for sites to read about business school and about working at a consulting firm, primarily McKinsey. I am glad that I found a well written blog that ends up being about both. I don’t know how often you get this but last night after reading your blog for about four hours I decided that I should start one of my own and see where it goes. After finishing reading dozens of your posts I made my first entry for http://mauricioscareerblog.blogspot.com/ and I cited you as one of the reasons for me starting it. Hope you don’t mind me putting you in there and posting a comment on this first entry. I didn’t know where else to put it and felt it would be somewhat relevant since I’m now starting my own version of what you started six years ago with this entry. Well thanks for your words on this blog and below is the the first paragraph of my first entry where you’re mentioned. Thanks,
So how does this work? Alright, well writing in one form or another is something I’ve always wanted to do. Getting published is one thing that I dream/think about late at night before I go to sleep when I idealize what I’d love to do at some future point in life. I never thought I would be a blogger but this idea/impulse to do so let’s me scratch my writing itch and I hope this is the first of many posts. So what prompted this endeavor and what is this blog about? Well, career wise a lot of life changing events have happened lately and some more are to come in the next couple of months and years. Most importantly is that since August of 2008 I’ve taken steps to gain acceptance to an MBA program. Also, I’ve been interested in reading about business school and working in marketing or consulting and last night I found http://marquisweblog.blogspot.com/. It is well written and spans over six years from apps to working at McKinsey and after. I’ve never had a journal but I’m sure it’s great to be able to look at entries and see how one’s life has progressed while at the same time sharing your experiences with others who might be going through the same events. All of these aforementioned reasons are why I’ve decided to also start a blog. To answer the second part of my question, this blog will talk about how I’ve gotten to where I am today in my MBA process and the career events that take place from here on out as I look to future career paths.
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet savvy so I’m not 100% certain. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
